Astana EXPO: Partners from BALTIC CLEANTECH ALLIANCE participated in World Expo

Astana Expo 2017, which was held in Kazakhstan’s capital, has ended 10 September. The World Expo has received a great attention in Astana and the number of visitors exceeded 3.5 million persons. As a fine achievement, the Finnish Pavilion won a gold medal and Latvian Pavilion – silver in its own size class on the closing day of Expo for the best implementation of the “Future Energy” theme. The BALTIC CLEANTECH ALLIANCE founder Finnish Water Forum (FWF), along with its 9 members, was one of the implementing partners of the Finnish pavilion. The total number of visitors to the Finnish pavilion was more than 300,000, which means that every ten visitor of Astana Expo has been also in the Finnish Pavilion.

Approximately 200 guests participated in FWF’s business events. The last event ”Water sector cooperation – Real water solutions for Kazakhstan” was held 8.9.2017 in a round table format, in which representatives of the private and public sector in Finland and Kazakhstan discussed topical issues in the field of water supply,  wastewater treatment and environmental protection, as well as modern challenges and solutions to create good conditions for cooperation. The event was opened by Minister for Housing, Energy and the Environment of Finland Kimmo Tiilikainen and Vice Minister of Agriculture of the Republic of Kazakhstan Yerlan Nuralievich Nysanbaev.

Companies participating in FWF’s events had a good opportunity to get direct and relevant contacts at B2B meetings. KaukoInternational Central Asia, a joint local representative of the FWF and its more than 110 member organizations, will continue to work to turn these contacts and opportunities into real projects, find business opportunities for businesses and help to start business. During the summer, there were already numerous commercial inquiries for both individual companies and business groups. At the same time, the local representative is preparing an establishment of a ’Green Technology Transfer Center’, designed to serve as a commercial development and business platform for, among others, water companies. We also thank Finland’s Embassy in Kazakhstan and Finpro’s team for good cooperation!

In addition, during the last week of Astana Expo has been arranged a delegation visit of the Minister for Housing, Energy and the Environment of Finland Kimmo Tiilikainen, and on the last day of Expo Minister of the Economy of Finland Mika Lintilä and State Secretary of Finland Paula Lehtomäki attended a networking event. FWF and part of its members have participated both in the delegation visit and networking event. The water-related issues were a point of high interest, especially at the meetings of Minister Tiilikainen, and cooperation was discussed among others with the Kazakhstan’s Minister of Energy, the Deputy Minister of Economy, the Minister for Investment and Development and subordinate organizations of this Ministry, such as Kazhydromet. The delegation also met Astana’s local government leadership, visited the Astana Water Facility, and met with UNDP and FAO representatives. Cooperation with the Finns was so interesting that representatives of the Water Resources Committee under the Ministry of Agriculture wanted to meet after a formal program on Friday night and to hear more about Finnish modelling skills.
